New ranking lists the Bay Area's ‘best’ private high schools. Here’s what they cost

Ten Bay Area schools are ranked among the 100 best private high schools in America.

That’s according to school information website Niche, which releases annual rankings of public and private schools and school districts. Rankings are based on a number of factors, including hard data like graduation rates and test scores as well as qualitative analysis of things like surveys of students, parents and alumni.

Niche’s methodology relies most heavily on self-reported data from its users, especially for private schools. That means data collection is not uniform, though a spokesperson told the Chronicle that Niche performs statistical analysis to ensure that the data is evaluated fairly across schools — and added that differences in ranking can come down to a very small margin.

Even after accounting for inflation, the average cost of sending your child to a private school in California more than doubled between 1990 and 2020, according to a Chronicle data analysis. Prices can vary a lot: Some Bay Area private schools cost only a couple of thousand dollars a year, while others charge close to $70,000 a year — more than quadruple the tuition cost of attending a University of California school.

The average annual tuition for the 2024-25 school year at private high schools in the Bay Area is $36,000. Many schools offer grants, scholarships, and other ways to offset the cost of attendance for qualified students.

Using the Chronicle’s database of private school tuition costs and information from Niche, here are the 10 highest-ranked private high schools in the Bay Area and the maximum annual tuition cost to attend. The numbers represent their spot in Niche’s top 100 ranking.watch hindi movies online free
